Writing Chemical and Ionic Equations - Test 1

This test is on writing chemical and ionic equations. You may like to revise this chapter first before attempting the question.

The total score for this test is 10 marks. You should complete the test in 10 minutes.

1. Write balanced chemical and ionic equations for the following reactions. Include state symbols in your answer.
a) zinc + dilute hydrochloric acid ---> zinc chloride + hydrogen
b) calcium carbonate + dilute nitric acid ---> calcium nitrate + carbon dioxide + water
c) aqueous sodium hydroxide + dilute sulfuric acid ---> sodium sulfate + water
d) aqueous sodium hydroxide + aqueous copper(II) sulfate ---> copper (II) hydroxide + sodium sulfate
e) aqueous sulfuric acid + aqueous barium nitrate ---> barium sulfate + nitric acid

1)a) Chemical Equation: Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq) ---> ZnCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)
        Ionic Equation: Zn (s) + 2H+ (aq) ---> Zn2+ (aq) + H2 (g)

b) Chemical Equation: CaCO3 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq) ---> Ca(NO3)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)
        Ionic Equation: CaCO3 (s) + 2H+ (aq) ---> Ca2+ (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

c) Chemical Equation: 2NaOH(aq) + H2SO4(aq) ---> Na2SO4 (aq) + H2O(l)
        Ionic Equation: OH- (aq) + H+ (aq) ---> H2O (l)

d) Chemical Equation: 2NaOH (aq) + CuSO4 (aq) ---> Na2SO4(aq) + Cu(OH)2 (s)
        Ionic Equation: 2OH-(aq) + Cu2+ (aq) ---> Cu(OH)2 (s)

e) Chemical Equation: H2SO4 (aq) + Ba(NO3)2 (aq) ---> BaSO4 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq)
        Ionic Equation: SO42-(aq) + Ba2+(aq) ---> BaSO4 (s)
